Spyrus Mercouris

Spyrus Mercouris (*1926, Greece) is a member of the board of the “Melina Mercouri Foundation”. He studied law in Athens and was active in the resistance during the German/Italian occupation of Greece. He worked as curator and organiser of numerous exhibitions in Greece and abroad, and was a producer and director of documentary films and theatre performances. From 1969 to 1981 he was the owner and director of Dimmerk Property Developments LTD in London. From 1981 to 1989 he worked as an adviser and coordinator for cultural events in the Greek Ministry of Culture and abroad. He was the director of the first European Capital of Culture, Athens 1985 – a Europe-wide initiative brought to life by his sister, the actress Melina Mercouris. He is the Honorary Chairman of the Network of Cultural Capitals and Cultural Months of Europe, ECCM, and Honorary Member of the European Union Club.
