Bert van Meggelen

Bert van Meggelen (*1946, Netherlands) has been the proprietor and director of the bureau Maatwerk for urban projects and cultural projects in Rotterdam since 2002; it develops cultural concepts for new housing and tourism projects and supports urban transformation processes with cultural and artistic strategies. He studied Sociology in Rotterdam and History, specialising in the Sociology of Housing and Living in Utrecht. Between 1980 and 1998 he taught Architecture, from 1988 to 1998 as Vice-Chancellor at the Academy for Architecture in Rotterdam. His specialities in teaching and research included the modernism debate in architecture, the metropolitan experience and the future of the metropolis, critical theory of culture. From 1998 to the end of 2002 he was artistic director of the European Capital of Culture, Rotterdam 2001. He is a member of international bodies, including President of Europan The Netherlands and a member of the administrative committee of Europan Europe as well as a member of the board of the Hungarian Capital of Culture Pécs 2010. He has taken part in various juries, including in major architectural competitions and has been the member of various advice bodies at national and European level, including for the Dutch government.
