Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) was founded in 1925 as a political legacy of Germany's first democratically elected president, Friedrich Ebert.
Against the backdrop of his own experience with political confrontation, Friedrich Ebert - a Social Democrat who rose from a humble craftsman's background to hold the highest political office in his country - proposed the establishment of a foundation to serve the following aims:
Furthering the political and social education of people from all walks of life in the spirit of democracy and pluralism,
Giving gifted young people access to university education and research by providing scholarships,
Contributing to international understanding and cooperation.
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, which was banned by the Nazis in 1933 and re-established in 1947, has continued to pursue these goals in its worldwide work to this day.
As a non-profit, private cultural institution, it is committed to the ideas and basic values of social democracy.
The central topics of the work of the FES are:
- Social justice and political reform,
- Democratic culture, society and modern state,
- Innovation and safeguarding the future,
- Globalisation based on solidarity.
The Forum Berlin is a division of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung offices in Berlin-Tiergarten. Its task consists in the organisation of political education and communication in four spheres of work:
- National policy: legal and domestic policy, modernisation of the state, cultural policy and the inner unity of Germany
- Berlin policy: Capital Forum, Berlin as a place for business, urban development, education policy and competence training
- Project on the conflict with right-wing extremism
- Project on social integration
The topics of the spheres of work are communicated to the public in expert meetings, colloquia, readings and small discussion groups. These efforts are intended to promote the democratic debate and communication between the public, politics, science and practice. In cooperation with partners from parliaments, governments, business and science, the aim of the work is to jointly elaborate potential solutions for politics in the spirit of a social and democratic society.
